At least 17 Indian pilgrims died on the spot when a bus carrying them plunged off the road at Jhyaplekhola along the Tribhuvan Highway around 8 this morning. Police said the identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.
According to Area Police Office in Khanikhola, the bus with Indian number plate, GJ, 14X, 990, was heading to Gorakhpur, India from Kathmandu when it suddently lost control and veered off 100 meters down the road.
Although the total passengers travelling in the double-decker bus are not yet certain, 17 bodies were found on the spot, while the 35 injured were rescued and brought to Bir Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for treatment, police said.The pilgrims were returning after a visit to Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.
As the bus remains stuck against hill, police suspected that some passengers might have stuck beneath the bus.
Police involved in the rescue operation said that the bus met with accident while trying to give way to the motorbike coming from the opposite direction.
Personnel of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force along with locals are carrying out rescue operations at the incident site.
