On 16 August 2024, Friday, Thame got hit by historic flood destroying Solukhumbu Village, a small village of Everest Region, Nepal. Thame is the most beautiful and popular destination for the trekkers reaching Mount Everest.
The flood in Thame is due to heavy rain fall during the monsoon season. This year rain is worse than usual, and it made glaciers and snow in the mountain melt quickly. This caused rivers and streams to overflow, sending the huge amount of melted snow and rain towards Thame village of Mt. Everest.
The flooded water with soil swiped away homes, fields and roads. The Thame River which was the attraction point of Sagarmatha, suddenly became very destructive. It swiped away houses, hotels and lodges, clinic and roads and also ruined trekking and hiking trails that tourists use to hike. More than 50 people have been homeless by this destructive flood on the other hand the good news is there is no death recorded but one person is missing since the day.
The people of Thame faced the flood with understanding and bravery. Local volunteers and teams from other place came for help. Medical supply, clean drinking water and food were immediately brought, they also helped in placing temporary shelter for those needy ones. Efforts began to repair damaged roads and rebuilt homes.
The flood showed how sensitive mountain areas are to extreme weather and climate change due to global warming. Yes, it also highlights the resilience and unity of the community, demonstrating their determination to rebuilt and adapt in the face of adversity.
